Indian Embassy Abu Dhabi and Consulate Dubai: Attesting UAE Documents for Use in India

A UAE-issued document needs attestation before it will be accepted in India: UAE MOFA attestation first for salary certificates and other documents issued by a UAE organisation, then the Indian Embassy, Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General of India, Dubai. Powers of attorney and sworn affidavits are handled differently — as an in-person notarial service at the mission, not attestation of an existing document.

What Is Indian Embassy Attestation for UAE Documents?

Indian embassy attestation is the step where the Indian Embassy, Abu Dhabi, or the Consulate General of India (CGI), Dubai, confirms that a UAE-issued document is genuine, so Indian authorities will accept it. It is separate from UAE MOFA attestation, which only confirms the document on the UAE side. For some UAE-issued documents, both steps are needed, one after the other.

This is the reverse of the more commonly asked question about attesting an Indian-issued certificate for UAE use (covered in our Indian certificate attestation for UAE guide). Here we are talking about documents that originate in the UAE and are headed to India.

Which UAE Documents Can the Indian Mission Attest?

The Indian Embassy, Abu Dhabi’s own attestation-service page names a narrower set of UAE-issued documents than is sometimes assumed. As things stand on an official check of that page:

  • Salary certificates and other documents issued by a UAE organisation — these need UAE MOFA attestation first (see the next section).
  • Powers of attorney and sworn affidavits executed by Indian citizens in the UAE — handled as an in-person notarial service, not as attestation of a document you already hold.

We could not find an official statement that the Embassy or CGI Dubai attests a UAE-issued educational certificate, marriage certificate or birth certificate for use in India — those certificate types are discussed on the Embassy’s own pages in the context of documents issued in India for UAE use, the opposite direction. If your document doesn’t fit the two categories above, contact us or the mission directly to confirm whether and how it can be attested.

Do You Need UAE MOFA Attestation Before the Indian Mission Will Accept Your Document?

For salary certificates and other documents issued by a UAE organisation, yes — the Indian Embassy, Abu Dhabi’s own page states that these must first be attested, in original, by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Consular Section), along with a copy of the attested document and your passport, before the Embassy will attest them.

Whether every other UAE-issued document needs the same MOFA-first step is not stated on any official page we could find — it is confirmed only for UAE-organisation documents such as salary certificates. If you are attesting a different kind of UAE document for use in India, check with us or the mission before assuming MOFA attestation is or isn’t required.

Indian Embassy Abu Dhabi or Consulate General Dubai: Which One Handles Your Document?

The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of India in Dubai both offer attestation and notarial services. Neither office’s own page that we could find states a formal rule for which UAE residents should use which office for UAE-outbound attestation — unlike some other missions in the UAE, there is no published emirate-by-emirate jurisdiction split for this particular service.

In practice, people typically use whichever office is more convenient, or the one that offers the specific service they need — for example, CGI Dubai publishes its own fee for a true copy of a marriage certificate and for verifying the genuineness of an educational certificate (see the cost section below). If you are unsure, contact us and we can point you to the right office for your document.

How to Get a UAE Document Attested for Use in India (Step by Step)

The exact steps depend on your document type, but the confirmed pattern for UAE-organisation documents is:

  1. Get the original document from the issuing UAE organisation (for example, your employer, for a salary certificate).
  2. Have it attested by UAE MOFA (Consular Section) — this is a confirmed prerequisite for salary certificates and similar organisation-issued documents.
  3. Submit the MOFA-attested original, a copy, and your passport to the Indian Embassy, Abu Dhabi, or CGI Dubai for Indian-mission attestation.
  4. Collect your attested document once the mission has processed it.

For a power of attorney or sworn affidavit, the process is different: you appear in person at the Embassy or Consulate with your original passport, and the document is executed and notarised there directly — there is nothing to “attest” beforehand, since the document doesn’t exist yet in final form until you sign it in front of the consular officer.

Our MOFA attestation in Dubai page covers that first step in more detail, and our embassy legalization services page covers the general embassy-attestation process we handle for UAE residents.

What Does Attestation Cost at the Indian Embassy or Consulate?

No UAE MOFA-first document’s Indian-mission attestation fee is published on an official Embassy or Consulate page we could find; the Embassy’s own page points applicants to sgivs.com for the current fee schedule rather than listing figures itself.

Two CGI Dubai fees have been published on the Consulate’s own site in an earlier check and may have changed since:

  • True copy of a marriage certificate: AED 48 service fee.
  • Genuineness certificate for an educational certificate (verified through the issuing university): about Dhs 58 verification + Dhs 4.50 SGIVS/IVS handling + Dhs 84 courier.

Treat these as a starting guide rather than a quote — confirm the current fee with the Consulate, with sgivs.com, or with us before budgeting for the service.

How Long Does Indian Embassy or Consulate Attestation Take?

The Indian Embassy, Abu Dhabi’s own page states that its notarial service (the one covering powers of attorney and sworn affidavits) is “rendered the same day.” No official page we could find states a same-day guarantee for document attestation itself (as opposed to the in-person notarial service), so timelines for attesting a salary certificate or other organisation document should be confirmed directly with the Embassy, CGI Dubai, or us before you plan around a specific date.

The Embassy also names an “IVS Global Attestation Centre” in Abu Dhabi, open 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, Sunday to Thursday, for document attestation — worth knowing if you plan to visit in person, though its page does not say which direction of documents it handles.

Frequently Asked Questions

For salary certificates and other documents issued by a UAE organisation, yes — UAE MOFA (Consular Section) attestation is a confirmed prerequisite. For other UAE-issued document types, this isn’t stated on an official page we could find, so check with us or the mission before assuming either way.

Confirmed categories are salary certificates and other UAE-organisation-issued documents (after UAE MOFA attestation), plus powers of attorney and sworn affidavits executed in person at the mission. We could not find an official page confirming attestation of a UAE-issued educational, marriage or birth certificate for use in India.

There is no published jurisdiction split for this service, so either may be able to help depending on what you need. CGI Dubai separately publishes its own fees for a marriage-certificate true copy and an educational-certificate genuineness check. Contact us if you are unsure which office fits your document.

No fee is published for Indian-mission attestation of UAE MOFA-first documents; the Embassy points to sgivs.com for current figures. CGI Dubai has separately published AED 48 for a marriage-certificate true copy and roughly Dhs 58 + Dhs 4.50 + Dhs 84 for an educational-certificate genuineness check, though these may have changed since they were last checked.

The Embassy states its notarial service (powers of attorney, affidavits) is rendered the same day. Document attestation itself is not confirmed as same-day on any official page we found, so confirm current turnaround with the mission or with us before relying on it.

Yes — this is handled as an in-person notarial service. You appear at the Embassy or Consulate with your original passport, and the document is executed and notarised there, rather than attested after the fact.
