UK Police Check (ACRO & DBS) Attestation for the UAE
Attest a UK Police Certificate for UAE Use
A UK police certificate — an ACRO Police Certificate, a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, or the Disclosure Scotland/AccessNI equivalent — needs an FCDO paper apostille, then UAE Embassy, London attestation, before UAE MOFA accepts it inside the UAE. The FCDO does not offer its cheaper e-Apostille for these certificates at all, so the paper route is the only option.
What counts as a UK police check for UAE use?
A “UK police check” covers a few different products depending on where in the UK the applicant has lived: an ACRO Police Certificate (for anyone who has lived in England or Wales), a standard or enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, a Disclosure Scotland certificate, or an AccessNI certificate for Northern Ireland. UAE employers, visa processes and some licensing bodies ask for one of these as proof of a clean criminal record, and they need the same attestation route before the UAE will treat them as genuine.
How do I attest an ACRO or DBS certificate for the UAE?
The route runs through three UK/UAE government steps:
- The original police certificate is apostilled by the FCDO Legalisation Office — on paper only (see the next section).
- The apostilled certificate is attested by the UAE Embassy, London, by post or through its digital attestation service.
- Once in the UAE, the document is attested by UAE MOFA — see our MOFA attestation guide for how that step works.
The UAE Embassy, London’s own digital-attestation page describes the certificate it returns as attested by “the UAE Embassy and MoFA” in one request, but it does not spell out clearly whether a further, separate MOFA step is still needed once the document is inside the UAE — confirm with Attest Dubai or the Embassy before assuming either way.
Does the UAE accept an e-Apostille for police certificates?
No. GOV.UK’s own list of documents the FCDO can legalise states plainly that the cheaper e-Apostille (£35) is not available for ACRO certificates, DBS certificates, Disclosure Scotland or AccessNI certificates, or fingerprint certificates — only the paper apostille can be issued for these document types. The paper apostille costs £45 for the standard service, £40 for next-day service, and £100 for the restricted urgent service, which is limited to registered businesses. GOV.UK’s standard service is described as taking “usually up to 25 working days” (figures from gov.uk/get-document-legalised, page updated 14 October 2026).
What about Disclosure Scotland or AccessNI (Northern Ireland) checks?
GOV.UK groups Disclosure Scotland and AccessNI certificates together with ACRO and DBS certificates on its paper-apostille-only list, so the same rule applies: no e-Apostille, paper apostille only. No separate UAE Embassy guidance specifically for Scottish or Northern Irish certificates was found; the general UK Embassy, London chain above is the one to follow unless Attest Dubai or the Embassy advises otherwise for your specific certificate.
What happens at the UAE Embassy, London step?
The UAE Embassy, London states on its own attestation pages that digital attestation requests are typically handled in 2–3 working days, and postal requests in up to 5 working days — figures as published on the Embassy’s site, which carries no date. The embassy requires the original apostilled document; photocopies and laminated documents are not accepted, and a bundle of multiple apostilles submitted as one is rejected (each document must be apostilled individually).
What does UAE MOFA do once the document is in the UAE?
UAE MOFA runs the UAE’s own Documents Attestation service: applicants log in with UAE Pass, select the country of issuance, upload or submit the document, and receive either a digital attestation (inside the UAE, usually within 2 hours in working hours) or a courier-based one (1–3 business days inside the UAE, up to 7 outside). Every attestation can be checked afterwards at verify.mofa.gov.ae or via MOFA’s support line, 800 44444. See our full MOFA attestation in Dubai page for the complete process.
Can a UAE Police Clearance Certificate be used in the UK?
In the other direction, the UAE’s own Ministry of Interior confirms that criminal-record (police) clearance certificates issued in the UAE are attestable for use abroad, and UAE MOFA’s published FAQ lists a fee of AED 300 for attesting a criminal clearance certificate for use abroad (figures from moi.gov.ae and mofa.gov.ae/en/faqs; both pages are undated). What there is not, is a UK embassy step: GOV.UK states plainly that British embassies “cannot legalise documents of any kind,” and the FCDO’s own Legalisation Office does not legalise documents issued outside the UK. So once your UAE-issued Police Clearance Certificate is MOI- and MOFA-attested, there is no further UK government step to complete in the UAE — the UK organisation asking for it (an employer, a visa or immigration authority, a professional body) sets its own acceptance rules, so confirm with them directly.
What documents and information do I need to start?
For a UK-issued certificate heading into the UAE, you will generally need:
- The original ACRO, DBS, Disclosure Scotland or AccessNI certificate (not a photocopy).
- A copy of the certificate holder’s passport.
- Details of where in the UAE the certificate will be used, since this can affect how it should be worded or addressed.
Attest Dubai can manage the FCDO apostille, UAE Embassy, London attestation and the final UAE MOFA step on your behalf, including for applicants who are already in the UAE and cannot travel back to the UK to start the process. See our step-by-step attestation guide for how we handle UK documents end to end.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the UAE accept an ACRO or DBS certificate without attestation?
No. A UAE employer, visa process or licensing body will not treat an unattested UK police certificate as valid — it must go through FCDO paper apostille, then UAE Embassy, London attestation, then UAE MOFA before it is accepted inside the UAE.
Can I use the FCDO's e-Apostille for my police certificate?
No. GOV.UK states the e-Apostille is not available for ACRO, DBS, Disclosure Scotland or AccessNI certificates, or fingerprint certificates — only the paper apostille can be issued for these document types.
How long does the FCDO apostille take for a police certificate?
GOV.UK’s own fee and timing page describes its standard paper-apostille service as taking “usually up to 25 working days.” Faster next-day or restricted-urgent services exist but the restricted-urgent option is limited to registered businesses.
How much does the FCDO apostille cost?
Per GOV.UK’s published fee table: £45 for the standard paper apostille, £40 for next-day service, and £100 for the restricted urgent service (registered businesses only). The e-Apostille fee of £35 does not apply here since it is not offered for police certificates.
What happens after the FCDO apostille?
The apostilled certificate goes to the UAE Embassy, London for attestation, by post (up to 5 working days, per the Embassy’s own page) or through its digital attestation service (2–3 working days).
Is there a separate UAE MOFA step after the Embassy, London attests my document?
The Embassy’s own digital-attestation page says the returned document is attested by “the UAE Embassy and MoFA” together, but it does not state clearly whether a further, separate MOFA step is still required once you are inside the UAE. Confirm with Attest Dubai or the Embassy before assuming either way.
Can I use a UAE Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) or Good Conduct Certificate in the UK?
The UAE side is confirmed: the Ministry of Interior treats criminal-record certificates as attestable for use abroad, and UAE MOFA’s FAQ lists an AED 300 fee for that attestation. There is no UK-embassy step to complete, since GOV.UK says British embassies cannot legalise any documents — so the UK organisation requesting the certificate decides what it will accept.
Does the British Embassy or a UK consulate in the UAE attest UAE documents?
No. GOV.UK states that British embassies “cannot legalise documents of any kind,” and the UK’s Legalisation Office does not legalise documents issued outside the UK.
What if my employer, university or visa authority has its own requirements?
Attestation confirms that a certificate is genuine and properly issued — it does not guarantee that a specific UK or UAE organisation will accept it for a particular purpose. Always check the receiving organisation’s own requirements before you start.
