“British Council attestation” is a bit of a misnomer. There is no attestation step called that. What people usually mean is the British Council’s own verification and stamping service, which checks that a UK qualification is genuine and that the issuing institution is recognised. On its own, that stamp does not make a document legally usable in the UAE — the actual chain is still the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) apostille, UAE Embassy legalisation, and UAE MOFA attestation.
This guide explains what the British Council service actually does, when you genuinely need it, and how it fits (or doesn’t) into the real UAE attestation chain. For the full step-by-step process, see our UK degree attestation guide and the UK Certificate Attestation service page.
What Does "British Council Attestation" Actually Mean?
The British Council runs a UK education qualification verification service from its Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah centres. You bring your original UK certificate, degree or diploma; the British Council contacts the awarding UK institution to confirm the qualification is genuine and that you were the person awarded it; and once that comes back positive, it applies its own stamp to the document. The British Council itself calls this “verification,” not attestation or legalisation — the wording “British Council attestation” is searcher shorthand, not an official term.
Is British Council Verification the Same as UAE Attestation?
No. The British Council’s own procedure document is explicit about this: its verification stamp is an early step, and legalisation still happens afterwards at the FCDO Legalisation Office, with UAE MOFA completing “the last step of the attestation process.” A British Council stamp by itself does not get your document accepted by a UAE authority, employer or university — you still need the FCDO apostille, UAE Embassy (or digital UAE Pass) legalisation, and UAE MOFA attestation on top of it.
When Do You Actually Need British Council Verification?
For most UK degree, diploma and transcript attestations, you do not need it at all. The official UAE Embassy London attestation guidance does not mention the British Council anywhere — the standard route is a UK notary public (or the document’s own registry) confirming the copy, then FCDO apostille, then UAE Embassy, then UAE MOFA.
British Council verification becomes relevant in two situations: (1) a specific UAE employer, university or authority has asked for it by name, usually as extra proof that a UK qualification and the institution that issued it are genuine, or (2) for UK-system school-level certificates (IGCSE/GCSE/GCE), where it is listed as one accepted verification route alongside the country’s Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the UAE Embassy — and even then, the British Council requires the certificate to already carry the school’s own stamp first. If nobody has specifically asked for it, a UK notary public can do the equivalent authenticity check instead.
What Is the Real Attestation Chain for a UK Degree in the UAE?
Whether or not British Council verification is involved, the chain that actually makes a UK document usable in the UAE is the same:
- The issuing UK institution, a UK notary public, or (optionally) the British Council confirms the document is genuine.
- FCDO apostille — the standard paper apostille costs £45 (next-day £40, restricted urgent £100 for registered businesses), and standard processing is usually up to 25 working days. Whether the UAE accepts the newer £35 e-Apostille for every document type is not stated on any official page, so treat the paper apostille as the safe default.
- UAE Embassy legalisation — available digitally (about 2 to 3 working days) or by post (up to 5 working days), per the UAE Embassy in London.
- UAE MOFA attestation, the final step inside the UAE.

How Much Does British Council Verification Cost, and How Long Does It Take?
The British Council charges an AED 60 administration fee for the verification step and AED 200 per stamp (both figures include 5% VAT). The UK institution itself may also charge its own separate verification fee, payable directly to that institution. Confirmation from the UK institution usually arrives within about two weeks, but the British Council is explicit that it is not responsible for delays on the institution’s side, so build in extra time, especially for older or less common qualifications.
Where Can You Get British Council Verification Done in the UAE?
You visit a British Council centre in person with the original certificate, complete a verification request form (plus a Data Protection Third Party Consent form if someone else is applying on your behalf), and return later once the issuing institution has confirmed the document. Stamping hours are 11am to 4pm on these days:
- Dubai (Oud Metha): Monday and Wednesday
- Abu Dhabi (Al Bateen): Monday to Thursday
- Sharjah: Tuesday and Thursday
What Documents Does the British Council Verify, and What Won't It Touch?
It verifies and stamps education, training and professional awards — certificates, degrees and diplomas — issued by an accredited UK institution, at any level, in original or photocopy form. It will not stamp passports, ID cards, birth or marriage certificates, testimonials, or other non-educational documents an institution or employer might ask for. It also rejects documents from programmes or institutions the UK education system does not recognise, and anything that looks altered or whose authenticity is in doubt.
What Happens After British Council Verification?
Once your document carries the British Council stamp (if you needed it in the first place), the process is identical to any other UK document: FCDO apostille, then UAE Embassy legalisation, then UAE MOFA attestation inside the UAE. Attest Dubai can pick up from wherever you are in that chain — including handling the UAE Embassy and MOFA steps once your document has its FCDO apostille — and will tell you upfront whether British Council verification is something your specific employer, university or document type actually requires, rather than letting you pay for a step you don’t need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is British Council verification required for UAE degree attestation?
No, not as a universal rule. The official UAE Embassy London attestation guidance does not name the British Council as a requirement. It becomes relevant only when a specific UAE employer, university or authority asks for it, or for certain UK-system school-level certificates.
What is the difference between British Council verification and UAE attestation?
British Council verification confirms that a UK institution is recognised and that your certificate is genuine. UAE attestation — the FCDO apostille, UAE Embassy legalisation and UAE MOFA attestation — is the separate chain that actually makes the document legally usable in the UAE. One does not replace the other.
How much does British Council verification cost in the UAE?
AED 60 for the verification step and AED 200 per stamp, both including 5% VAT, as administration fees charged by the British Council. The issuing UK institution may charge its own additional fee.
How long does British Council verification take?
Usually about two weeks for the UK institution to confirm your qualification, though the British Council notes this can take longer and it is not responsible for delays on the institution’s side.
Can I skip British Council verification and go straight to FCDO and UAE MOFA?
In most cases, yes. A UK notary public can perform the equivalent authenticity check instead, and the standard route for most UK degree attestations is notary or institution confirmation, then FCDO apostille, then UAE Embassy, then UAE MOFA — without involving the British Council at all.
Where can I get British Council verification done in the UAE?
In person at the British Council centres in Dubai (Oud Metha, Monday and Wednesday), Abu Dhabi (Al Bateen, Monday to Thursday) or Sharjah (Tuesday and Thursday), between 11am and 4pm, with your original certificate.
