Document Attestation in Sydney for the UAE

What Is Document Attestation in Sydney for UAE Use?

Document attestation in Sydney for the UAE is the process that makes a document issued in Sydney or elsewhere in New South Wales legally valid in the UAE. Because the UAE is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille on its own is not accepted. The document goes through DFAT authentication in Australia, then the UAE Embassy in Canberra, and is finalised by UAE MOFA.

Documents used by Sydney applicants usually come from New South Wales authorities: the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Sydney universities and the NSW education bodies. Attest Dubai manages the process from Dubai, so you do not need to travel to Canberra. For other Australian documents, see our Australia Certificate Attestation page.

How Do I Attest a Document Issued in Sydney for the UAE?

There are four steps, and the first two happen in Australia before the document reaches the UAE.

  1. Issuer or notary. A birth, marriage or death certificate from the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is an original public document. A degree, a photocopy or a private-college record needs verification or notarisation first (see below).
  2. DFAT authentication. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade authenticates the official’s or notary’s signature and seal. For UAE use this is an authentication, not an apostille.
  3. UAE Embassy in Canberra. The embassy runs a digital attestation through UAE Pass. A MOFA-approved provider collects the original document, and the digitally attested copy is emailed to you.
  4. UAE MOFA. The final UAE attestation, which makes the document usable for visas, employment, study or business in the UAE.

DFAT and the UAE Embassy do not publish a fixed turnaround for this chain, so allow extra time if you are working to a visa or employer deadline.

Which Authorities Issue Documents for Sydney Applicants?

Most documents from Sydney come from New South Wales authorities, and DFAT treats each type differently:

  • Birth, marriage and death certificates: the full certificate from the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Ceremonial marriage certificates are not accepted.
  • University degrees, diplomas and transcripts: the university (for example the University of Sydney, UNSW Sydney, UTS or Macquarie University) must first verify the document as a true and accurate record. A notarised photocopy is accepted once that is done.
  • TAFE documents: DFAT accepts the original directly.
  • School certificates: need the signature of an authorised officer of the NSW education authority (for HSC credentials, NESA), not the school’s own administration.
  • Police certificates: the AFP National Police Certificate.
  • Company documents and powers of attorney: notarised by an Australian notary public first.

Do I Need a Notary in Sydney?

Only for some documents. Photocopies, private school or college records, powers of attorney and statutory declarations must be certified by an Australian notary public, which means a notary who is a lawyer. DFAT does not accept certification from a Justice of the Peace for this purpose. Original public documents signed by an Australian official, such as a state birth certificate, can usually go straight to DFAT.

A power of attorney with commercial content is treated as a commercial document, and a company’s memorandum and articles of association are attested as separate documents.

Do I Have to Go to Canberra?

No. The UAE Embassy’s digital attestation is requested online through UAE Pass, so you do not need to visit the embassy in person. The physical original is still required, because the provider collects it and the original is couriered back after attestation. Why Do Documents From Sydney Get Rejected?

The most common reasons are avoidable:

  • A degree or transcript sent to DFAT before the university verified it.
  • A photocopy with no Australian notary’s certification, or certified by a Justice of the Peace.
  • A school certificate signed by the school instead of the state education authority.
  • A commemorative or ceremonial certificate instead of the full registry certificate.
  • At UAE MOFA: a laminated document, or one carrying several apostilles or authentications bundled together. Each document must be authenticated individually.

Who Needs Attestation of Sydney Documents?

Skilled workers, students and families moving from Sydney or wider New South Wales to the UAE for a job, a family visa, a UAE university place or a business setup need attested documents. UAE employers and universities also use attestation to verify the qualifications of a Sydney graduate or hire.
