Australia Degree, Diploma and Transcript Attestation for the UAE

What Is Australia Degree Attestation for the UAE?

Australia degree attestation for the UAE is the process that makes an Australian-issued degree, diploma or transcript legally recognized for use in the UAE. Because the UAE is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, the document needs full authentication rather than an apostille: first the issuing university or education authority, then DFAT in Australia, then the UAE Embassy in Canberra, and finally UAE MOFA inside the UAE.

Attest Dubai guides you through every step of the chain and manages the final UAE MOFA attestation once your document reaches the UAE. For other Australian documents, see our Australia Certificate Attestation page.

How Do I Attest an Australian Degree, Diploma or Transcript for the UAE?

There are four steps, and the first three happen in Australia before the document reaches the UAE.

  1. University or education-authority verification. The issuing university must first confirm the degree, diploma or transcript is a “true and accurate record.” TAFE and CIT documents can usually be submitted as originals without this step; school certificates instead need the signature of an authorised officer of the relevant state or territory education body, not the school’s own administration.
  2. DFAT authentication. Once verified, the document goes to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Authentication and Legalisation Service. Because the UAE does not accept an apostille, ask DFAT specifically for an Authentication, not an Apostille.
  3. UAE Embassy, Canberra. The DFAT-authenticated document is then authenticated by the UAE Embassy (3/40 Blackall Street, Barton ACT 2600).
  4. UAE MOFA. The final attestation happens inside the UAE, in Abu Dhabi, Dubai or your own emirate — this is the step Attest Dubai manages for you once your document arrives.

Does the UAE Accept an Apostille for an Australian Degree?

No. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille on its own is not accepted. The UAE Embassy in Canberra’s own guidance for Australian educational documents states plainly that “Apostille will not be recognised.” Australian documents for UAE use must instead go through the full authentication chain: the issuing institution, DFAT, the UAE Embassy in Canberra, and UAE MOFA.

What Does DFAT Require Before It Will Authenticate My Document?

DFAT’s requirement depends on where the document came from:

  • University degrees, diplomas and transcripts: the university must verify the document as a true and accurate record first; a notarised photocopy is accepted once that verification is done.
  • TAFE and CIT documents: DFAT accepts the original document directly.
  • Primary and secondary school certificates: need the signature of an authorised officer of the relevant state or territory education authority. A signature from the school itself is not accepted.
  • Private schools and colleges, and any photocopy: need to be notarised by an Australian notary public lawyer first. DFAT does not accept certification from a Justice of the Peace, pharmacist or police officer for this purpose.

What Documents Do You Need to Start?

In most cases you will need: the original degree, diploma or transcript (or a university-verified, notarised copy where that applies); a copy of your passport; the DFAT authentication once issued; and, if you already have it, the UAE Embassy Canberra authentication. If an employer, university or visa authority asked for the attestation, keep a copy of that request — Attest Dubai will confirm with you which document type and which of the steps above apply before anything is submitted.

UAE-Issued Documents for Use in Australia: What's the Process?

Going the other way is simpler on paper. A UAE-issued degree or institution document is first attested by UAE MOFA inside the UAE. Australia does not run an equivalent embassy legalisation step for foreign documents: DFAT legalises only Australian-issued documents, and no Australian mission in the UAE routinely legalises UAE-issued paperwork for use back in Australia. The university, employer or authority in Australia that is receiving the document sets its own requirement from there, which is commonly just a certified translation if the document is not in English. Check with that specific receiving body before you travel or submit anything.

How Long Does Australia-UAE Degree Attestation Take?

DFAT and the UAE Embassy in Canberra do not publish a fixed turnaround for this chain, so build in extra time if you are working to a visa or employer deadline. The UAE MOFA step, once your document reaches the UAE, is published: attestation completed digitally inside the UAE normally takes about two hours during official working hours, and the courier route takes one to three business days inside the UAE (up to seven if the document is still coming from outside the UAE). Timelines vary — contact us for a specific estimate once we know which steps your document still needs.

Why Do Australian Degree Attestations Get Rejected?

The most common reasons are avoidable: a degree or transcript submitted to DFAT before the issuing university verified it; a photocopy with no Australian notary’s certification; a school certificate signed by the school rather than the state or territory education authority; and, once the document reaches UAE MOFA, a laminated certificate or a document carrying more than one apostille or authentication bundled together, both of which UAE MOFA rejects outright.

Who Needs Australia Degree Attestation?

This applies to Australian graduates moving to the UAE for a job, a UAE university place, or a professional licence that requires an attested degree, as well as UAE employers and universities verifying an Australian hire or applicant’s qualifications. It also covers the less common reverse case: UAE graduates who need their degree accepted by an Australian employer, university or assessing authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so Australian documents need full authentication — DFAT, then the UAE Embassy in Canberra, then UAE MOFA — rather than an apostille. The UAE Embassy’s own guidance states that an apostille will not be recognised.

The issuing university must first confirm the degree is a true and accurate record. Only after that can DFAT place its Authentication on the document.

DFAT accepts original TAFE and CIT documents directly, skipping the university-verification step required for degrees. After that, the DFAT, UAE Embassy Canberra and UAE MOFA chain is the same.

No. DFAT requires the signature of an authorised officer of the relevant state or territory education authority. A signature from the school’s own administration is not accepted.

Only if an Australian notary public has notarised it first. DFAT does not accept certification from a Justice of the Peace, pharmacist or police officer for this purpose.

At the UAE Embassy in Canberra (3/40 Blackall Street, Barton ACT 2600), after DFAT has completed its authentication. This step takes place in Australia, before the document is sent on to the UAE.

Those two steps happen in Australia and need to be completed there, by you or a representative. Attest Dubai guides you through them and manages the final UAE MOFA attestation once your document reaches the UAE.

Usually not through a formal legalisation chain. DFAT legalises only Australian-issued documents, and Australia has no equivalent embassy step for UAE documents. The UAE side still needs UAE MOFA attestation, and the Australian institution receiving it sets its own requirement, often just a translation if the document is not in English.

DFAT and the UAE Embassy in Canberra do not publish fixed turnaround times for this chain. The UAE MOFA step is published: about two hours for digital attestation inside the UAE during working hours, or one to three business days by courier.

Common reasons include a document that was not pre-verified by the university, an uncertified photocopy, a laminated document, or more than one apostille or authentication bundled onto one certificate — UAE MOFA rejects laminated and bundled documents outright.
